Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Karan Johar’s directorial debut, turned 21 last week. When this Shah Rukh Khan-starrer romantic drama hit the theatres, the drama and larger-than-life sequences went down very well with the audience. However, speaking to mid-day, Karan revealed that the ethics and politics of the movie were all wrong. “None of the characters had any backstory. We have no idea what Shah Rukh or anyone else does for a living,” the filmmaker said.

Karan Johar also admitted that many aspects of the film were quite illogical. “The eight letters that Anjali got from her mother Tina (Rani Mukerji) made no sense,” he told the publication. However, Karan also added that he was thoroughly influenced by all the classic Hindi films and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was an amalgamation of all his passions.

“None of the characters in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai had any backstory. We have no idea what Shah Rukh Khan or anyone else does for a living.”

Did you ever think how the characters would be fleshed out if the movie were to release in 2019? Well, Karan Johar has an answer to that. “Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) would definitely have a spine. Instead of confronting him, the people around kept pushing him to do things. He was deeply confused about his wants and needs and did not stand up for himself or his near and dear ones. Of the many things that I would have changed about Rahul Khanna is his lack of emotional sensitivity. The Rahul of 2019 would be more secure of himself,” KJo explained.

He also cites another instance that he would have altered. “There’s a scene where Rahul taunts Anjali (Kajol) for getting married to Aman (Salman Khan) and she walks away. I would have instead had Anjali call Rahul out. My first draft of the story had this bit, but then I thought it would be a disservice to the leading man,” Karan said.
