Akshay Kumar-Mouni Roy-starrer Gold opened big at the box office. Releasing on Independence Day, the patriotic sports drama had the highest opening as far as Akshay Kumar’s films go, but since shown a sharp dip in business.

While the Reema Kagti film raked in around Rs 81.30 crore over the long opening weekend of nine days, it failed to hold on to the numbers subsequently. It would be crossing the Rs 100-crore mark for sure, but given its opening numbers, Gold failed to perform adequately. Week 2 saw the film earning Rs 14.70 crore, bringing the total to Rs 104 crore.

Gold is competing hard with the John Abraham-starrer Satyamev Jayate, and the two films together have raked in around Rs 45 crore on day 1.

Gold is loosely based on the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as an independent nation in 1948. Powerfully combining sports and patriotic fervour, Gold has all the essential ingredients to be a blockbuster.
