There were 6 nominations in the Best Original Story category at the 63rd Filmfare Awards this year. Amit V Masurkar walked away with the award for Newton.

Here’s a look at the nominations for Best Original Story:

Amit V Masurkar - Newton

Despite all the allegations of it being inspired by the Iranian film Secret Ballot, Rajkummar Rao’s Newton held strong and survived the plagiarism controversy. Director Amit V Masurkar who’s also credited as the writer of the film denied that he had seen Secret Ballot before writing his story.

Amit Joshi - Trapped

How much of a story can you weave around a man who gets stuck in an empty high rise without food, water or electricity? Plenty if you ask Amit Joshi, who wrote such a gripping tale that filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane was inspired to take it to the big screen.

Rahul Dahiya - G Kutta Se

Rahul Dahiya, the 34-year-old filmmaker from Haryana wrote G Kutta Se after seeing a woman becoming a victim of honour killing in his own village. He was so compelled to express himself that he wrote a film that has “several moments that tremble with uncomfortable bluntness and tension,” to quote critic Nandini Ramnath.

Shanker Raman and Sourabh Ratnu - Gurgaon

Shanker Raman and Sourabh Ratnu’s intense thriller Gurgaon is so well written that the silences in the film speak volumes. High on emotions with well-defined characters, this was perhaps one of the most underrated films of 2017.

Shubhashish Bhutiani - Mukti Bhawan

Can death also become the exploration of life and relationships? Yes it can and that’s exactly what Shubhashish Bhutiani does with the story of Mukti Bhawan.

Suresh Triveni - Tumhari Sulu

How exciting can the story of a regular housewife who dreams of being a working woman be? Writer and director Suresh Triveni grabs this premise and runs all the way to the finishing line with it. No wonder Tumhari Sulu was one of the most successful films of the year.
