Director Anurag Kashyap, actor Konkona Sensharma and filmmaker Mani Ratnam are among a list of 49 eminent personalities who have signed an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising concerns over lynching of minorities, the misuse of the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and the rising intolerance against dissent in the country.

The letter lists statistics about the rise in lynchings and hate crimes against minorities including Dalits, Muslims and Christians particularly since PM Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assumed power in May 2014. It urges the PM to crack down on these cases and implement harsher laws against the crimes.

2. PC-Starrer ‘The Sky Is Pink’ to Premiere at Toronto Film Festival

Shonali Bose’s directorial venture The Sky is Pink is set to have a global premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival on 13 September. The official Twitter handle of TIFF confirmed the news. The news was shared on the official website of the movie gala, which is scheduled to run through September 5 to 15.

Hrithik Roshan’s Super 30, which is based on the life of Indian mathematician Anand Kumar, has been declared tax-free in Delhi. The announcement was made by the deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia who took to Twitter to talk about his interaction with Anand Kumar when he and Anand were both visiting a Delhi government school. He further added that the film has been given a tax-free status. Moreover, Anand Kumar will hereon be conducting one class every month for students of Delhi government schools.

4. Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Uri’ to Return to Theatres 26 July, Here’s Why

Six months after Uri: The Surgical Strike released in theatres and went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year, the Vick Kaushal starrer is getting a re-release on 26 July to mark the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Producer Ronnie Screwvala confirmed the news to Mumbai Mirror and had this to say:

“The idea of making the film was to instil a sense of pride in the hearts of every Indian and to highlight the incredible service of the armed forces for our nation. I’m honoured to be a part of this initiative wherein Uri will be showcased across 500 theatres in the state on Kargil Vijay Diwas.”

5. Amitabh Bachchan Donates Rs 51 Lakhs for Assam Flood Victims

After Akshay Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan has donated Rs 51 lakhs to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the victims of Assam floods. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal thanked the superstar for his contribution. He took to Twitter to write, “We appreciate Shri Amitabh Bachchan ji for contributing Rs. 51 lakh to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. This is a great gesture & show of care for the people. Thank you, on behalf of the people of Assam, for your support.”
