Kabir Khan’s upcoming sports drama 83 will mark Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s first film together as a married couple. While Ranveer is essaying the role of former Indian skipper Kapil Dev, Deepika has confirmed that she will play Kapil’s wife Romi Bhatia.

In an interview with Bombay Times, Deepika said that she gave a nod to the film out of “passion and enthusiasm” and not just because Ranveer was starring in it. While the actor has begun prepping with material that has been sent to her, she says she hopes to spend some time with Romi Bhatia as well to better understand the role. She said,

“I have met her a few times, including our wedding reception, and I have interacted with her socially over the years. I am also referring to whatever material the director’s team has sent across to me. My parents have known their family for many years. So, I feel I know her and hope that she is proud and happy with the film. I intend to connect and spend some time with her before I start filming to be able to understand her perspective better.”

According to Deepika, Ranveer’s stint training with veterans cricketers like Kapil Dev Mohinder Amarnath Bhardwaj has improved his cricketing skills.

“When I saw Ranveer train for this part, I could tell that it is something that he is inherently good at. Maybe, he lost touch because he started playing other sports. A few months of training has really brought him back and made him a good cricketer,” she said.

Deepika also recently finished wrapping up shooting for Chhapaak. The Meghna Gulzar directorial is based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal.

83 is based on India’s historic win at the 1983 Cricket World Cup. It also stars Hardy Sandhu, Chirag Patil, Saqib Saleem, Pankaj Tripathi, Tahir Bhasin, Ammy Virk and Saahil Khattar. The film releases on 10 April 2020.
