The film had been embroiled in controversy for months and the time before release was extremely tense, as the makers feared outrage from the Karni Sena. But all this seems to have piqued the curiosity towards the film as it took a bumper opening of Rs 32 crores. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhasali and loosely based on the epic poem Padmavati, Padmaavat stars Deepika Padukone as Rani Padmavati - a Rajput queen known for her beauty - who is the wife of Maharawal Ratan Singh, played by Shahid Kapoor. Sultan Alauddin Khilji, played by Ranveer Singh, plays the tyrant ruler who attacks their kingdom to claim her. The film ended up reaching the Rs 100 crore mark in the first weekend itself.
