Anushka Shetty’s plus sized look in her upcoming film Size Zero has been creating waves online. The actress has pushed the envelope for heroines down south, having gained as much as 20 kilograms to portray the role of an overweight single girl in the film.
According to the producers, the film is about the challenges faced by a plus sized girl with a mother who is keen to get her married off. The posters and the teasers have been garnering a lot of attention on Twitter with co-stars and other celebrities lauding Anushka for being brave enough to take on the role.
Size Zero is a bilingual romantic comedy directed by Prakash Kovelamudi that also stars Arya in the lead. The movie is titled Inji Iduppazhagi in Tamil. “We had only Anushka in mind when we approached her for the role and she jumped at it. We shot for over 6 months and she could not commit to other films during the period, but she was game,” says Rajeev Kamineni, the Executive Director of PVP Cinemas, who have produced the film.
He also rules out any similarities between the recent Bollywood film Dum Laga Ke Haisha, in which Bhumi Pednekar sported a similar look.
Though Anushka’s look may seem like she’s making a statement, it seems she may finally end up losing weight and conforming to the conventional standards of ‘beauty’ in the end. “Anushka is not going to get slim and glamorous all of a sudden. Her change is logical and gradual in the film,” says Rajeev, “the message is that love comes in all shapes and sizes—beauty is not skin-deep.”
Arya plays a documentary film maker and a fitness freak who inspires Anushka to transform herself. Sonal Chauhan, Urvashi, Prakash Raaj and Bharath also feature in Size Zero, which will have an early October release. Nagarjuna, Karthi and a few other Tamil and Telugu stars will appear in cameos in the film.
