Dev Patel, an actor of Indian origin who became popular after his debut film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, has earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing Saroo Brierley in ‘Lion’. The film has an international cast, and also stars Nicole Kidman.
The nomination is for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role, where Patel will be competing with the likes of Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Simon Helberg, (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Aaron Taylor Johnson (Nocturnal Animals).
Directed by Garth Davis, the film portrays the true events of Brierley’s life, who was separated from his family at the age of five and adopted by an Australian family, but returned to India 25 years later in search of his lost family.
Besides Patel, the film has earned three other Golden Globe nominations. Nicole Kidman received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. The film has also been nominated for Best Motion Picture - Drama and Best Original Score.
