Before the detailed review let us deal with the Fawad Quotient. Is he there? Yes, in a small 15 minute appearance that leaves us yearning for more. But is he good? Yes, he is, in fact he’s great and is a complete visual pleasure.

But Fawad Khan isn’t the only actor in the film from our neighbouring country. There is also Imran Abbas (his last Bollywood film was Creature 3D with Bipasha Basu) who I am sure is feeling rather lonely as no one seems to care enough to protest.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil deals with matters of heart. Written and directed by Karan Johar, it is in many ways different from his previous films. While here too we see rich kids capering around each other, great music and foreign locations, the handling is much more nuanced and mature.

Love is shown in all its glorious complexity – there is passion, heartbreak, jealousy and vulnerability. How do we negotiate the piercing pain of unrequited love? Is it possible to think practically while in the throws of obsessive attraction? The film does not come up with easy answers and in doing so it becomes all the more special.

The performances prove to be its greatest strength. Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma, both powerful actors in their own right, come together to display their crackling chemistry. There effervescence is infections.

Without doubt they are magnificent in the emotionally charged scenes. Cameos by Shahrukh Khan and Alia Bhatt along with Lisa Haydon and Fawad Khan all add their own charm to make this a memorable affair. All, except Aishwarya Rai. She is gorgeous no doubt, a fact established in the film and frankly something we all unanimously agree to. But unless she gets over her own perfect looks, she will always be the green-eyed beauty Aishwarya and not someone who melts into her role.

ADHM isn’t perfect. It feels stretched at times. Also appears to try too hard to tie up all the loose ends but this is still the better film of the week. Pritam’s music helps weave a beautiful tapestry with brilliant performances making it richer.

I give it 3.5 QUINTS OUT OF 5.
