10 Exciting Hollywood Blockbusters Coming Your Way in 2016
Hollywood will give Bollywood a real fight in 2016 with these much awaited blockbusters
As the growing invasion of our box office courtesy Hollywood suggests, we can expect an array of spectacular releases in 2016. These films are big budgeted, and liberally sprinkled with wow-inducing special effects to give the audience an experience that hasn’t yet been equaled by desi fare. The success of Furious 7, Jurassic World, Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Spectre in 2015 shows that Hollywood’s command over Indian audiences is only growing.
So keep our list of Hollywood’s top-notchers to look forward to this year in mind, as you reach out for your phones and get booking.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
Intended to be the sequel of 2013’s Man of Steel, and the beginning of a gigantic franchise populated by DC Comics characters, this film will make two of the most popular superhero characters collide head-on. Directed by Zack Snyder, it will have a fresh Batman in Ben Affleck, along with Henry Cavill’s Superman, against Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is there too, and if you’re lucky, Aquaman, The Flash and many others will show up too. Expect big fireworks.
Steven Spielberg makes a comeback to big family adventure, and this time, he is aided by Melissa Mathison’s screenplay who penned E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) more than three decades ago. Based on Roald Dahl’s beloved novel, it is a tale of friendship between Big Friendly Giant and a little girl. Looks like a good time for the young and the old.
Independence Day: Resurgence
This is one sequel that has taken two decades to come to life, and quite honestly, it looks like old wine in a new bottle. While Will Smith has decided to pass on, most members of the older star cast, especially Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman will be reprising their roles, joined by new characters. Director Roland Emmerich is banking on nostalgia for its appeal, and only time will tell whether the audience feels any nostalgia at all.
The Jungle Book
For those who grew up with the animated series on Doordarshan, this film looks like the ultimate treat. Mowgli, and his friends Baloo, Bagheera, Kaa will revisit us in immensely realistic CGI rendition, and we are already getting goosebumps imagining Shere Khan’s roar. Jon Favreau will be directing this adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved book, which boasts of several celebrity voices.
If superheroes weren’t enough, Suicide Squad will present you a team of super villains to cheer for, with their wisecracking villainy and a potent dose of stunts. After Batman v Superman, this will be another big release from the DC Comics universe, with names like Will Smith and Margot Robbie are attached to it. If the buzz is anything to go by, Jared Leto with his tattoos and crazy antics will be in the spotlight. Don’t be so serious.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
A spin-off of the Harry Potter series, this film will expand the universe of the wizarding world, and as the title suggests, will feature several magical creatures. Eddie Redmayne will lead the cast, and the story will be set in America. Since J.K. Rowling has herself written the screenplay, be assured that it will serve all the magic you are expecting.
The Legend of Tarzan
Edgar Rice Burroughs’ mythic Tarzan gets a new makeover in this action adventure, in which he will trash his loincloth to dress himself in urban clothes when his past, the jungle comes calling. True Blood alumni Alexander Skarsgård with his six feet plus physicality will essay the lord of the apes, along with Margot Robbie’s Jane. The film is directed by David Yates, who did the last four Harry Potter films, and it also toplines stars such as Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Djimon Hounsou, John Hurt, and Jim Broadbent. With pure adrenalin in its primal form, Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic character might be the next best thing in the blockbuster season of 2016.
Captain America: Civil War
Another movie with multiple superheroes, this is the 13th film from the Marvel universe. It intends to pitch Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr) on opposing sides, and the plot is about them settling scores while trying to protect our world. Since it’s been directed by the Russo brothers who made the wonderful Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), we are quite positive of its outcome. More incentive? You will see the Black Panther in it.
It’s raining superheroes, but we have a special fondness for the universe of the X-Men, for it works as a metaphor for the minorities in our world. This new movie will feature Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant, awakened after thousands of years, deciding to purify humankind by recruiting a team of powerful mutants. Of course, the onus is on Professor X and his team to stop him. As for the cast, it promises a mouthwatering lineup with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Oscar Isaac, Nicholas Hoult, Rose Byrne, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Olivia Munn and Lucas Till. Bring it on.
Professor Robert Langdon is back and this time, he will be the target of a manhunt which will pull him into a landscape of classic art, secret passageways, and futuristic science. Again, he will require his knowledge of symbology to solve an intricate puzzle.
Tom Hanks will reprise his role as the Harvard professor, and he will be joined by Felicity Jones, Omar Sy, Ben Foster and our very own Irrfan Khan. Dan Brown’s fictional alter ego has been very popular among Indian readers, and this film promises many nail-biting moments.
