Congress MLA Arif Naseem on Wednesday, 26 June, raised objection over Team India’s proposed orange-coloured jersey. He alleged that the Modi-led government has changed the colour of the jersey as part of its design to ‘saffronise’ the country.

“(Narendra) Modi wants to paint the entire country with saffron. Today, jerseys are being made saffron. Modi-ji, the person who decided the colours of the national flag was a Muslim leader. If you want to pick a colour for the jersey, pick the tricolour, I won't mind,” he told reporters.

Twitter took to opining and joking about the matter.

Social activist Sadhavi Khosla stated that it is not a big deal. “MenInBlue will be MenInOrange for a day. Why such a hue and cry,” she tweeted.

It Is A Non-Issue

Shiv Sena Leader Priyanka Chaturvedi attacked the Opposition. “Missing where outrage needed on important issues and ever present for non issues,” she tweeted.

Journalist Rifat Jawaid said that he was “stunned’. “Feel sorry for the bankruptcy of ideas and issues India’s opposition parties are suffering from,” he wrote.

TV journalist Gaurav C Sawant said that objecting to orange/saffron in Team India’s cricket jersey shows that the Opposition has lost the plot.

Orange/Saffron Debate

“Just say saffron,” said writer Advaita Kala. “It is a good idea meant to distinguish Team India from the other side that also wears blue. Saffron has been systematically demonised and needs to be rescued, after all it is in our tricolour as well,’ she tweeted.

One Twitter user put out a tweet explaining the difference between saffron and orange.

Actor Siddharth compared the jersey to the petrol pump attendants’ attire and said, “These new jerseys are amazing! But glad they're only for this one game coming up.”

Another twitter user tweeted a picture of Cadbury’s Bournvita drink, saying “Don't know about you but the new Indian team jersey looks great to me.”
