Chunchu Nair is probably the most talked-about cat on the internet now. It all started when Chunchu’s family decided to remember her with an obituary in a newspaper on her first death anniversary.

The obituary read, “Chunchu Nair, Molutty, we badly miss you.” The obituary appeared on Twitter and drew mixed responses. While some appreciated the heartwarming gesture, others pointed out that the cat had apparently been given a caste.

“What a lovely gesture,” said one Twitter user. “May it be as happy where it is now as it was with you,” she said.

“Didn’t know cats also have caste,” said one Twitter user.

“Cat with a Nair surname?” asked journalist Rama Lakshmi. “Anthropomorphise everything?” she tweeted.

“Next time you tell me about the high literacy rate in Kerala, see this ‘Nair Cat’,” said another Twitter user. “Education is not just about keeping the BJP away,” he tweeted.

Funny Memes

There were also many funny memes surrounding Chunchu Nair. One of them made fun of Kerala MLA PC George who had once commented, “If Saint Thomas hadn’t come to Kerala, I would maybe be Kesavan Nair.”

In the meme, George’s cat says if Saint Thomas had not come to Kerala, I would have been a Nair cat.”
