Stepping up his attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, 9 April, called the Bharatiya Janata Party’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls “the voice of an isolated man”.

Soon after Gandhi’s tweet, Union Minister Smriti Irani responded to the Congress president’s remarks, hitting out at him for neglecting his constituency, Amethi. Speaking to ANI, Irani said that there is a question mark on his efficiency despite having a vision. She said Rahul is a man who stays restricted to making announcements.

“When it comes to reality of his own constituency, people get to know that despite being an MP for so long he hasn’t been able to develop the area.”

Earlier, the Congress had said the ruling party had “simply copy pasted” its 2014 poll document and changed all the previous deadlines.

Releasing the manifesto on Monday, 8 April, Modi said the focus of their ‘sankalp patra’ is on “one vision, one direction”. Soon after its release, the manifesto drew criticism from other Congress leaders and Opposition parties.

‘BJP Should Have Come Out With Maafinama’

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel said the BJP should have come out with a ‘maafinama’ (letter of apology) instead of a manifesto.

In a series of tweets, Patel said the difference between the BJP’s manifesto and that of the Congress can be seen from the cover page itself.

Full of Hollow Promises: Sheila Dikshit

Delhi Congress President Sheila Dikshit said the BJP’s manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls was “full of hollow promises”, adding that it was no match to her party’s manifesto.

In its manifesto the BJP made a plethora of promises, including expeditious construction of the Ram temple, firmly dealing with terrorism, doubling farmers’ income in the next three years, making India the third-largest economy globally by 2030, and scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution that gave a special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

“The BJP manifesto is full of hollow promises and false claims. It cannot come anywhere near the Congress manifesto ‘Hum Nibhayenge’.”
Sheila Dikshit said in a statement.

The people of the country had fully understood Modi's "falsehood", the former Delhi chief minister said, adding that the voters had lost all faith in him and his "hollow promises".

BJP Should Have Released Action-Taken Report: Mayawati

Stressing that the party which had failed to fulfil the promises made in 2014 had no moral right to release a fresh manifesto, BSP President Mayawati said the BJP ought to have issued an action-taken report instead.

“The BJP and the Narendra Modi government, which blatantly betrayed the people and failed to fulfil the election promises, have no moral right to release a new manifesto," she said adding that the people can’t believe hem and that they should tender an apology to the people.

‘A Fresh Set of Jumlas’

Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, too, hit out at the BJP after the saffron party released its manifesto. Kejriwal termed the BJP manifesto a “fresh set of jumlas”.

He raked up the issue of demonetisation and said that Modi and BJP President Amit Shah did not have the courage to say why demonetisation was done and farmers were pushed towards destruction.

Reminding the Prime Minister of his party's 2014 promise of granting full statehood to Delhi, Kejriwal said the present manifesto does not have any mention of it which meant that Modi is lying and in turn making it even more difficult for people to believe in him.

BJP Using Ram Mandir to ‘Sharpen Communal Polarisation’: Yechury

As BJP once again promised construction of a Ram Temple in its manifesto, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the BJP has been using it for the last 30 years in a bid to “sharpen communal polarisation.”

He further added, “Their only target is to consolidate the Hindutva communal vote bank. But this time that is not going to happen”.

The CPI(M) general secretary further said the ruling party's manifesto was a “fresh set of jumlas” which have been “unleashed” upon India.

"But the people will never forget the disaster that this Modi government unleashed on their lives and livelihoods in the past five years. No fresh set of tamasha can hide the truth," he said.

BJP Manifesto a List of New 'Jumlas': CPI

The CPI said the BJP manifesto was a list of new ‘jumlas’ to conceal the betrayal and the broken promises made to the people in the last five years.

CPI national secretary D Raja said the BJP’s manifesto confirms the saffron party is nothing but a political tool of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh whose ideology is “divisive, sectarian, communal and fascist.”

“The BJP manifesto is a list of new jumlas (gimmicks) to conceal the betrayal and broken promises of last five years. The BJP has become the Bharatiya Jumla Party,” he said.
