LS Elections: SP Fields Shalini Yadav to Fight Modi in Varanasi

Shalini had run for the Mayoral poll of Varanasi Municipal Corporation in 2017 from the Congress but didn’t win.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Monday, 22 April declared candidates for three seats in Uttar Pradesh, including for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi.

Shalini Yadav, who joined Akhilesh Yadav-led party on Monday evening, was given ticket from Varanasi and Sanjay Chauhan was declared from Chandauli, a party release said.

Shalini Yadav had run for the Mayoral poll of Varanasi Municipal Corporation in 2017 from the Congress but did not win. She is the daughter-in-law of former Rajya Sabha Deputy chairperson Shyam Lal Yadav.

After joining the party, she said, “After joining the party, she said: "I will work under the leadership of our national president Akhilesh Yadav. I will act according to his directions."

The SP also fielded former BJP leader Ram Charitra Nishad from Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat in place of Rajendra S Bind, it said.

Nishad, a BJP MP from Machlishahr constituency, had last week joined the SP in the presence of party chief Akhilesh Yadav.

Varanasi, Chandauli and Mirzapur constituencies will got to polls in the last phase on 19 May.
