It was payday in the Parliament on Wednesday and many MPs made a beeline to the State Bank of India branch in the Parliament building, Hindustan Times reported.

After numerous adjournments, both in the Lower and Upper Houses – which halted the functioning of the Parliament's Winter session for 11 consecutive days of the Winter Session – around 300 MPs dutifully went to the SBI branch that exclusively serves only lawmakers.

Many withdrew the weekly limit at a go, while Indian citizens queued up every other day to deal with the shortage of cash at the banks.

Immediately after the first adjournment in the Rajya Sabha, some MPs rushed to the bank.

“Like other people, we have to run our houses and pay our domestic help and others” a senior member told Hindustan Times. Some parliamentarians even enquired if their salaries would be available in cash.

Banks have asked companies to pay salaries through prepaid cards instead of cash and also imposed an internal limit on withdrawal.
