Two weeks in, demonetisation continues to strike blows on the lives of common people. On Wednesday, an 84-year-old man died of a heart attack while waiting in line to withdraw money from a post office in Jabalpur, Ludhiana.
Piara Singh had been visiting the post office for four days straight, but failed to obtain cash as it always ran out.
Accompanied by his son Tajinder, Piara Singh had to be present himself as the account was in his name.
Around 10:45 in the morning, he reportedly felt uneasy and fainted. He was given water by onlookers, and rushed back home. He passed away after reaching home.
Elsewhere in Punjab, a farmer committed suicide by consuming poison. Forty two-year-old Ravinder Singh of Majupura village in Amritsar, failed to withdraw cash for his daughter’s wedding, which is in two weeks.
He had reportedly booked a venue for the wedding and was also in debt.
Kala Singh, the former sarpanch of the village said he had been upset about not being able to withdraw money.
From the last three days he used to visit a bank at Chetanpura. He succeeded in withdrawing Rs 2,000 but he needed lakhs to pay for the marriage palace and other services.Kala Singh told The Tribune
Police, however, denied that he was upset over the cash crunch, and suggested the reason was something else.
