As COVID-19 cases in the country show an exponential surge, India on Friday, 7 January recorded 1,17,100 fresh coronavirus cases – significantly higher than the 90,928 cases on Thursday. 302 deaths due to the viral diseases were reported in the last 24 hours.
The active COVID-19 cases in the country stand at 3,71,363, while the positivity rate is 7.74 percent.
India has confirmed 3,007 cases of the highly-transmissible Omicron variant from 27 states and Union territories so far.
While Maharashtra tops the chart with 876 cases, Delhi has detected 465 cases of Omicron so far.
India has crossed the 1 lakh single-day rise mark merely 36 days after the first cases of the fast-spreading Omicron variant were detected in the country on 2 December.

India's single-day case rise has breached the 1 lakh mark after seven months. On 6 June 2021, India had reported 1,14,460 new cases.
Over 1 lakh cases have been reported merely eight days after India traversed past the 10,000 single-day case rise.
The highest number of daily COVID-19 cases being reported from Delhi and Maharashtra.
Delhi on Thursday saw 15,097 COVID-19 cases, a big jump from the 10,665 cases observed on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Maharashtra recorded 36, 265 cases on Thursday.
Where Do We Stand, as Compared to the Second Wave?
India has crossed the mark of 1 lakh single-day infections for the first time on 5 April 2021, when it had seen 1,03,558 new cases during the second wave.
At that time, the active caseload of the country was 7.41 lakh. At present, the active cases are nearly half of the number there were then, at 3.71 lakh.
While the number of cases on 5 April has amounted to 5.89 percent of the country's total COVID-19 cases, the cases on 7 January comprise merely 1.05 percent of the total coronavirus cases recorded in India.
The recovery rate on 5 April stood at 92.8 percent, while it presently stands at 97.57 percent.
While the cases on 5 April had been accompanied by 478 deaths, India recorded 302 new COVID-19 deaths on 7 January.
