Toilet- Ek Prem Katha, the Akshay Kumar-starrer has been in news from the day since the project was announced for its unusual title. After the film’s trailer released, there were allegations that it has been plagiarised from a short film titled Manini.

Now, there are reports that the film is an “unofficial remake” of the National Award winning Tamil film, Joker. As per a report in Deccan Chronicle, the makers of Toilet have paid a substantial amount of money to the makers of Joker so that the news of this “remake” is not made public.

Joker, directed by Raju Murugan, revolved around an eccentric villager Mannar Mannan who falls in love with a girl from a neighbouring village. However, the girl says that she will marry Mannan only if he gets a toilet built in his home. While the film goes on with several twists, turns and sub plots - the idea of a man building a toilet for his wife seemed to have hit a chord with the makers of Toilet - Ek Prem Katha.

The reason why the makers don’t want the news of Toilet being inspired in anyway to come out is because - if any film is even partially a remake it is not eligible for the National Award. Since the producers of Toilet did not want any allegations of plagiarism to come up, they apparently thought it was a good idea to pay the makers of Joker to buy their silence.
