Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are busy running all around town for the promotions of Anurag Basu’s upcoming fantasy musical, Jagga Jasoos. The awkward tension between the current co-stars and ex-flames though, is no fantasy. In a recent interview, Ranbir rubbed Katrina the wrong way by constantly butting in while she spoke and even finishing her sentences.
So Katrina made a not-so-mean joke about a really bad one that Ranbir cracked. That seems to have set the ball rolling. Ranbir’s mansplaining was really quite shocking to be honest and Katrina made sure she didn’t take it lying down.
Here’s what happened. When Katrina was asked about what Jagga and Shruti were like as characters, she started answering the question. But Ranbir couldn’t help chipping in with more. He hijacked her answer to explain that Shruti treats Jagga like a kid who knows nothing. He didn’t stop there of course, much to Katrina’s frustration. Finally, Katrina slammed back saying that in real life Ranbir treats her like a kid who knows nothing, because he won’t even let her finish her sentences.
The sarcasm shot through the roof from here on. Katrina got annoyed that Ranbir was answering all the questions on her behalf and pointed out that she’s sitting right there. But Ranbir didn’t mince his words either. “Ya but you’re not saying it properly” came his retort.
It is downright ridiculous when he points out that as the producer of the film, he can speak as and when he wishes. OMG, as shit hit the fan already?
Kat is in no mood to calm things down either. She points out that when they started out on the film, Ranbir used to show up on set as her partner-in-crime. But recently he’s been all about ‘teaching’ her what to do or what to say. If the mansplaining wasn’t bad enough, Mr Kapoor is all sarcasm from here on. He says he was just returning the favour, since she was so great to him on Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani and also happened to be the first actress he wanted to sign as a producer, because of her stardom. Katrina is rolling her eyes and mouthing “unbelievable”.
Her face is full of “whatever” expressions. She’s clearly had it. She lets Ranbir answer all her questions till the very frustrating end of this interview. I’m still rubbing my eyes, wondering if I’m really seeing this, or reading too much into their dynamic. But the rules of film promotion and stardom are crystal clear when it comes to interviews- both stars get to answer their share of questions. Hogging is simply unacceptable.
So Ranbir, what the hell was that all about?
