In an interview with India Today, Sonam slammed those bringing the 20-year-old down.

It’s disgusting, appalling. I know some colleagues in the industry who are claiming to be artists said that and I think it’s very disheartening for me. See, first of all, everyone is entitled to an opinion. What she feels is a very compassionate way of looking at it; nobody is to be blamed for anybody’s death. It’s very evolved of her to think that way, very forgiving of her, and instead of applauding her, we are bringing her down. Whether you agree with her or not, it’s her father. She’s entitled to say whatever she has to for him. You cannot criticise her for it. It’s very cruel.

Sonam, who will next be seen in Veere Di Wedding with Kareena spoke about the actress’ dedication towards her profession.

Since I was 21, I’ve been an open feminist. I believe in giving everyone an opportunity. If a man decided, or was going through something, I don’t think we’d ever judge him, or have this conversation for that matter. Aamir Khan doesn’t work for two years and no one says he’s gaining weight or losing weight - you’re lauded for it and I think you should celebrate the fact that Kareena Kapoor is an empowered woman, a mum and she’s someone who’s working.

She added,

I don’t know any man who can say that. The fact that she was working through her pregnancy and had a child, and two months later, she’s prepping for her film. Instead of hiding away for a year, she is continuing with her life and to balance both the sides and be a thorough professional is amazing.

Sonam also stressed on the need for women to be supportive of each other.

A woman cannot be another woman’s enemy; we have to be supportive of each other, otherwise it’s so callous and we’re only bringing everyone down. Someone said something very important to me, you’re making such a big deal about Hilary Clinton becoming the President of America and we’ve had so many female leaders in our country. I don’t know what the big deal is. As long as she’s the best person for the job, she should be president. But at the same time, I realise our country is very contradictory, the women in our country who are leaders are the most sexist. You have to be supportive of your colleagues and other women, so we can progress.
