Some people from Shiragur, a flood-affected village in Karnataka’s Belagavi district, invited Indian Army personnel to celebrate Eid al-Adha with them on Monday, 12 August.

Personnel of the Army's Maratha Light Infantry unit celebrated the festival and offered prayers with the Muslim community, reported ANI.

The army unit has been conducting relief and rescue operations in the flood-hit district.

According to a report by The Times of India, the locals served biryani during the celebrations as a token of thanks to the soldiers for their efforts during the floods.

The death toll in Karnataka floods rose to 42 on Monday. At least 12 persons are still missing and around 5.8 lakh people have been evacuated so far. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa toured the affected areas of Dakshina Kannada and Mysuru districts to oversee the rescue and relief works there.

With the situation improving, search is on for those who have gone missing and efforts are being made to reach out to those who need to be evacuated.
