Navy Says It's Ready to Extend All Help to Flood-Hit Kerala
Extending all possible assistance to the Kerala government to deal with the flood situation, Indian Navy on Friday said it was ready to open its airport for operation of small commercial flights if the inundated Cochin International Airport remains shut for a longer period, reports PTI.
"In view of prevailing situation, the Southern Naval Command of the Indian Navy is all geared up and ready to provide any assistance to the civil administration as and when required," a Defence spokesman said.
He said the state government had requested the Navy to allow the Naval air station 'Garuda' for facilitating civil aircraft operations as the international airport suspended all operations till Sunday.
Tamil Nadu Death Toll Rises to 5
The death toll in rain-related incidents in the hilly Nilgiris district rose to five on Friday, even as the tourist destination of Avalanche recorded the highest rainfall of 911 mm on a single day in south India.
A woman and her daughter died when the wall of their house collapsed on them in Indira Nagar in Pykara, some 21 km from here, while a man escaped with minor injuries in the early hours of Friday, official sources told PTI.

With torrential rains battering the Nilgiris district in Tamil Nadu, leading to floods and landslides, the state government has requested the Indian Air Force to be on standby to carry out rescue operations.
Chief Minister K Palaniswami said that Avalanchi in the district recorded 911 mm rainfall on Thursday, PTI reported.
In a statement on Friday, the chief minister said a total of five people have been killed in various rain-related incidents in the district and announced a relief of Rs 10 lakh each to their families.
Rains Subside in Goa, Restoration of Flood-Hit Parts Begins
A day after several villages in North Goa were inundated following heavy showers and the release of water from Tillari dam, rains abated in the state on Friday, prompting the government to expedite the restoration work in the flood-hit region.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant reportedly said on Friday that normalcy would be restored in the flood-hit parts in the next two days.
"We have taken all the necessary steps for flood relief with all the departments getting involved in the process. The rains have subsided for now, but it will take at least two days to restore the normalcy," Sawant said, according to PTI.
28 People Dead in Rain-Related Incidents in Kerala
People in several districts of Kerala, particularly Wayanad and Malappuram, continued to face the wrath of the rains with landslips and floods leaving 28 people dead in rain-related incidents over the past three days and cutting-off several low-lying regions, PTI reported.
A total of 738 relief camps have been opened across the State with over 64,000 people displaced from their houses by the floods and rains being shifted there.
40 Feared Trapped Under Debris in Kerala
At least 40 people are feared to have been trapped under debris in landslips that shook the flood-affected districts of Wayanad and Malappuram in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Friday, according to PTI.

UAE Issues Advisory Against Travel to Kerala Due to Floods
The UAE has issued a travel advisory to its citizens who are either in Kerala or intend to visit the state to exercise extreme caution in the light of heavy rains, which have caused damaging floods in many areas and killed 28 people, reports PTI.
According to the UAE's official news agency, Wam, the advisory urges the citizens to follow instructions issued by the Indian authorities in connection with the natural calamity.
"In a second advisory, the Consulate, based in the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram, has urged the UAE citizens visiting Kerala to register with the diplomatic post so that it can keep track of them and ensure their safety and welfare," Wam said.

'Karnataka Floods Death Toll up to 24, Rs 100 cr Released': Yediyurappa
Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa, addressing a press conference, gave the following updates on the situation in Karnataka:
- 24 people have lost their lives, 9 are missing. Compensation of Rs 5 lakh will be given to the next of kin of the deceased.
- 1024 villages in 17 districts are severely affected due to the floods.
- 2.43 lakh people have been evacuated, out of which 1.61 lakh have been moved to 664 relief camps.

The Southern Railway on Saturday announced operation of special trains between Ernakulam-Chennai, Chennai-Kollam and Bengaluru-Kollam, PTI reported.
Train No 02640 Ernakulam-Chennai Egmore is scheduled to leave Ernakulam at 5 pm on Saturday while Train No 02623 Dr MGR Chennai Central-Kollam will depart from Chennai at 8 pm.
Train No 06526 KSR BengaluruKollam passenger special is scheduled to leave from KSR Bengaluru at 8 pm on 10 August.

'Situation Under Control, No Need to Panic': Wayanad District Collector
Wayanad District Collector AR Ajayakumar on Saturday said that the situation was "totally under control" and that there was "no need to panic".
"Apart from a major landslide reported in Puthumala near Meppadi, no other such major incident has been reported," Ajayakumar told ANI.
He further said that "preventive evacuation was done at most of the vulnerable locations in the area, and nearly 30,000 people are now in relief camps."
People in Low-Lying Areas of Dakshina Kannada Told to Shift to Safe Areas
Due to the torrential rains in the coastal areas, Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil has urged residents in low-lying areas to immediately shift to safe places, as the brimming river Nethravati is flowing at a dangerous level.
Water in the Nethravati and Gurpur Phalguni rivers are overflowing due to incessant rains and have already entered low-lying areas near the banks of the river.
Bantwal taluk is flooded due to incessant rains.
Rescue operations were being done by boats ferrying stranded people from areas which are almost submerged, jeeps were also used to rescue people in distress.
A number of houses at Upppinangady and Bantwal, which are located on the river banks are submerged in water, official sources told PTI.
23 Trains Cancelled in Flood-Hit Kerala
As many as 23 trains were cancelled and two services were partially disrupted in Kerala on Saturday due to heavy monsoon rains which gained strength since the last three days.
Most of the services from Palakkad division have been disrupted and a few started their journey from nearby Coimbatore, a senior Railway official told PTI.
"Most of the tracks in central and north Kerala have been damaged by the monsoon rains. At some places, tracks were flooded and at other places mounds of earth have fallen on the tracks. As soon as we clear the debris and the water recedes, we can resume the services," the official reportedly said.

On Monday, 12 August, Rahul will reportedly proceed for the Calicut Guest House. Later during the day, he is expected to visit Kalpetta region in his constituency - Wayanad. He is also expected to visit the disaster area, post which he will hold a review meeting with the Collectorate.
57 Lives Lost in Kerala
As of 7 pm on 10 August, over 57 people were feared dead in the floods in Kerala, according to a tweet by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. 1,65,519 persons from 46,400 families have been evacuated to safety and housed in over 1318 flood relief camps operating across the state.
The maximum deaths were reported from Malappuram district - 19 people - and 14 lives were lost in Kozhikode and 10 in Wayanad.
30 Dead, 14 Missing in Karnataka
The most recent flood assessment report by Karnataka states that 30 people are dead and at least 14 are missing. Over 3,14,155 people have been evacuated and 50,595 animals rescued, and housed in 924 relief camps in several parts of the state. Over 4.15 lakh hectares of agriculture and horticulture crop loss has been recorded.
Landslides have been reported in several places in Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Chikkamangaluru and Uttara Kannada. Connectivity across 136 major roads (NH, SH, major district roads) has been disrupted.
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa posted a flood situation report on Twitter, in which he noted that as of 8 pm on 10 August, rainfall intensity over the upper Krishna Basin in Maharashtra has reduced.
The report also stated that inflows into reservoirs are well coordinated to prevent any inundation of downstream areas and the villages likely to be affected have been evacuated. He has appointed senior officers in drought affected districts to oversee relief operations.
Four Indian Air Force choppers have been deployed in Belagavi, Mysuru and Raichur, and one Navy chopper in Uttara Kannada.
9 bodies have been recovered so far in the incident of landslide that occurred at Kavalappara, Nilambur in Malappuram district on 8 August.
No Freight Charges on Relief Material
Railways has announced that no freight charges will be levied on relief material sent to the flood-affected regions of Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra.
“We urge you to help us in this effort and send as much relief material as possible, which we will transport for free,” tweeted Piyush Goyal, Minister of Railways.

Kochi Airport Resumes Operations
Flight operations from the international airport here resumed on Sunday afternoon, two days after it was shut due to inundation of the runway area following heavy rains, an official said.
The Abu Dhabi-Kochi Indigo flight touched down at around 12.15 pm, marking the resumption of the operations, the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) official said.
Check-in commenced at 9 am in both the domestic and international terminals.

After pounding Kerala for days, there was some let up in the rain fury on Sunday even as the toll climbed to 72, with 58 people still missing and over 2.51 lakh people in relief camps across the state.
With the recovery of more bodies, including 23 from Malappuram, 17 from Kozhikode and 12 from Wayanad since August 8, the toll has gone up to 72, as per the latest report issued by the government at 7 PM Sunday.
Rescue Operations in Karnataka Continue
Naval Air Station, INS Hansa at Goa continued aerial rescue and relief operations in flood-hit Belagavi district on 11 August. Naval helicopters from INS Hansa carried out three sorties in which 26 stranded people were moved to relief camps on Sunday.
Rescue, Relief Works on in Full Swing in Flood Affected Karnataka
Rescue and relief works are on in full swing in flood ravaged districts of Karnataka, with a let up in the rains and water receding in most of the affected areas, officials told PTI in Bengaluru on Monday, 12 August.
With the situation improving, search is on for those who have gone missing and efforts are being made to reach out to those who need to be evacuated.
However, due to heavy inflow into various reservoirs and release of water from there, caution is being maintained in areas surrounding dams, officials said, adding that work is also on to clear roads that were flooded or blocked due to landslides.

"My Parliamentary constituency Wayanad has been devastated by floods with thousands left homeless and shifted to relief camps", Gandhi said.

'PM Modi Has Agreed to Help Kerala': Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi said on Monday that he has approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi to seek his help for flood-hit Kerala.
Gandhi arrived in Kozhikode on way to Wayanad, his Lok Sabha constituency, which has been badly hit by flood. He will tour the Wayanad district on Monday, before returning to Delhi.
"It's a tragedy and all must help Kerala. I have spoken to the Prime Minister to seek help. He has agreed to help," Gandhi said, soon after attending a review meeting at the Malappuram collectorate.
He also said that he has requested the chief minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan to expedite the rescue and relief operations in Wayanad.
"I visited the flood-affected areas in the state yesterday and the topmost priority of those displaced is reconstruction of their houses," Gandhi told reporters.
"We held a meeting with the regional officials yesterday and I have requested them to ensure that all the medical supplies and rehabilitation material reaches those in need of it," Gandhi further said.

With rains subsiding in many parts of Kerala, search operations are underway in landslide-hit areas of Kavalappara and Puthumala in Malappuram and Wayanad, even as the death toll in the monsoon fury climbed to 76 and 2.87 lakh persons have sought refuge in relief camps.
Fifty eight persons are still missing, of whom 50 are in Malappuram, where the toll is 24, PTI reported on Monday.
An official update at 11 am said 2,87,585 people have taken shelter in 1,654 relief centres in the state.
Army Likely to be De-requisitioned in North K'taka Today: IDF
The Integrated Defence Staff (IDF) said on Monday that rains have stopped in North Karnataka and water levels have started receding.
"The situation is under control and de-requisitioning of Army is likely to commence today. With most areas being accessible by road, helicopters are also likely to be de-requisitioned," the IDF reportedly said.
The IDF further said that in Kerala, "weather is holding but with orange alert in force till tomorrow (Tuesday), close watch will need to be maintained on situation," ANI reported on Monday.

Karnataka Floods: Inflows in the Reservoirs Steadily Decreasing,
After the havoc due to floods in Karnataka in the past few days, situation has improved in the affected districts of the state, where 6.77 lakh people had been evacuated in the past week, according to PTI.
Inflows in the reservoirs are steadily decreasing, an official update issued by the State government said on Tuesday.
The state government said relief operations were in full swing, and senior officers camping in the districts were overseeing them.

Indian Expats in UAE Open Collection Centres for Flood-Hit Kerala
Indian expats in the UAE have come together to help thousands of families displaced in Kerala due to the massive floods that have claimed 88 lives, according to a media report.
Voice of Humanity, a group of around 50 stage artists from Kerala, has set up collection points to collect relief materials for the affected, the Khaleej Times reported.
"We are mainly collecting clothes, hygiene items for ladies and kids, toiletries, slippers and some food items like oats and biscuits," Shoukky Sulaiman, joint secretary of the group, said, adding three collection centres have been set up in Dubai.
Sulaiman said the group has assessed the needs based on the feedback of their group members in India who are coordinating rescue and relief operations in various camps.

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda has assured Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa of full cooperation from him and that of his party in the state government's efforts towards rebuilding the lives of those affected in flood and rain ravaged parts Karnataka.
In a letter to Yediyurappa, the JD(S) patriarch also wished success to all programmes or relief work undertaken by the state government for the betterment of flood victims.
Referring to the destruction caused by the rains, floodsand landslides in different parts of the state and relief measures undertaken by the administration, Gowda said in addition to rescuing, providing relief and rehabilitation to those affected should be the priority of any government.
UN General Assembly Prez Condoles Loss of Lives Due to Floods in India
President of the 73rd session of UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa has expressed solidarity with India over floods wreaking havoc in southern and western parts of the country.
Espinosa's spokesperson Monica Grayley said she has "sent her condolences to the people and the Government of India after the monsoon floods in the southern and western parts of the country, which led to over 140 deaths, and hundreds of thousands of people being evacuated,” PTI reported.
She reportedly said the president of the UN General Assembly expressed her solidarity to all of those who were affected by the natural disaster.

Death Toll Climbs to 58 in Karnataka Floods
With the recovery of four bodies in Hassan district, the toll in the devastating floods and incessant rains in parts of Karnataka has gone up to 58, PTI reported on Wednesday, quoting authorities.
Meanwhile, with inflows into the reservoirs steadily decreasing, the situation in the affected districts in north, coastal, malnad and south interior Karnataka has improved further.
According to an official update, senior officers camping in the districts are overseeing relief operations, which are in full swing.
“Damaged roads are being restored on war-footing for movement of men and materials," it said.
Joint rescue teams comprising personnel from State Disaster Response Force, National Disaster Response Force and Army have evacuated nearly 6.98 lakh people as on today, the official note said, according to PTI.

BS Yediyurappa Meets PM Modi in Delhi; Requests Fund Release
Addressing mediapersons in Delhi, the CM said that he had a 40-minute meeting with the PM where he had apprised him of the situation in the state.
"He has the full information regarding the flood situation. He had earlier sent Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman to assess the damage and he has agreed to send a study team. Such a situation has not been seen in the state in the last 108 years. Fifteen days of rain has battered the state, along with water coming from Maharashtra. We have informed the PM about this. He will send a team and we have requested for urgent release of funds. The losses exceed Rs 40,000 crore due to broken bridges, homes, roads etc," he said.

The death toll in Kerala floods rose to 111 on Friday, with authorities retrieving seven more bodies as floodwaters receded from several parts of the worst-hit state.
The sunny weather helped in search operations as more bodies were retrieved from Kavalappara in Malappuram and Puthumala in Meppadi in Wayanad, the worst hit in the second spell of rains since 8 August, PTI reported.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan reportedly said 31 persons were still missing and over 1.47 lakh are in 891 camps across the state.
According to an IMD bulletin, moderate rainfall with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45 kmph is very likely to occur at one or two places in Malappuram, Idukki, Eranakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts.
Normlacy Returning to Rain-Hit Kerala, Toll Reaches 113
As normalcy was slowly returning to rain-battered Kerala, people have started moving to their homes from relief camps, even as the toll climbed to 113 on Saturday, with more bodies being retrived from the landslide hit districts of Malappuram and Wayanad.
As per the 9 AM update, 50 people have so far lost their lives in Malappuram and 12 in Wayanad, the two northern districts, where 28 people are still missing.
Search operations are continuing at Kavalappara in Malappuram and Puthumala in Wayanad, the two areas which were the worst hit in the second spell of South West Monsoon rains since August 8, where massives landslides had wiped out two villages.

Ground Penetrating Radars Being Used to Locate Bodies; Toll Now 121
Ground Penetrating Radars were put into use on Sunday to locate bodies at Kavalappara in Malappuram and Puthumala in Wayanad, where massive landslides had wiped out two villages, even as the toll in rain battered Kerala climbed to 121 with the retrieval of more bodies, reports PTI.
A team of experts from Hyderabad started the search operations at the two villages with GPR, which will help detect bodies buried under mounds of earth.
A state wide calamity report issued by the government tonight said 121 people have lost their lives in Kerala in the second spell of the South West monsoon rains since August 8 and that 47,622 people are still in 296 relief camps.
Toll in Flood Hit Karnataka Goes up to 76
The toll in rain related incidents in flood hit Karnataka went up to 76 on Sunday, with the recovery of 10 more bodies, while 10 persons are still classified as missing in the state, where relief and rehabilitation work is underway, officials said on Sunday, reports PTI.
The districts of north, coastal and Malnad regions were badly affected in the rains, floods and landslides in the last couple of weeks.
Relief operations were being constantly monitored by the Chief Minister and Chief Secretary, officials said, adding that the Chief Secretary visited flood affected areas in Belagavi district to review relief operations.
As many as 526 relief camps are operational as on Sunday, where clean drinking water, food and other relief materials were being provided to 2,20,906 people, they said.
Newly Appointed Karnataka Ministers to Visit Flood-Hit Areas
The expanded cabinet of the Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa's government in Karnataka that met for the first time in Bengaluru on Tuesday decided to send all the newly appointed Ministers to flood-ravaged districts of the state to assess the relief and rehabilitation being undertaken there.
"In today's cabinet meeting, it has been decided that the Ministers who were sworn-in will visit the flood-hit areas on Wednesday and the day after. They will review the situation and relief and rehabilitation work being undertaken there," Minister JC Madhuswamy said, PTI reported.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, he said, "After spending two days in flood-hit areas, we will meet once again and discuss the steps to be taken up."
Rahul Seeks Setting up of Single-Window System to Re-Issue Documents by Flood Victims
Congress leader and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi has written to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, seeking setting up of a single-window system for re-issuance of documents lost or damaged during the recent devastating floods in the state.
Gandhi, in his letter to Vijayan, flagged that many flood-affected families in his constituency lost essential documents such as ration cards, Aadhaar cards, school or college certificates, land titles, registered documents, birth certificates, death certificates, tax receipts, pan cards.
