1. Yeddyurappa Takes Oath as CM, Rahul Gandhi Calls it Mockery of Constitution
In his first press conference after taking oath as the Karnataka chief minister, Bharatiya Janata Party’s BS Yeddyurappa reiterated his promise to waive farm loans.
Following a marathon emergency hearing in the wee hours of Thursday, 17 May, the Supreme Court refused to stay the swearing-in after the Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) combine challenged the governor’s decision to invite the BJP to form the government.
To prevent alleged “horse-trading” by BJP, MLAs elected from the Congress and JD(S) might be flown to a resort in Cochin, sources told The Quint.

2. This is a Misunderstanding: Geeta Phogat on Absence
Fifteen top Indian wrestlers have been dropped from the national camp for the Asian Games by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) after they failed to report for the camp in time. Four Phogat sisters, Geeta, Babita, Ritu and Sangeeta, are part of the 15 who have now been reportedly sent show-cause notices by the federation.
The eldest of the Phogat sisters, Geeta however told The Quint that this entire episode is the result of a big misunderstanding.
“I injured myself in late April and went to Bangalore to get myself checked. I was given an injected and advised rest. I wasn’t able to walk too much so I could not join the camp in time,” she told The Quint.

3. West Bengal Panchayat Poll: TMC Set for Sweeping Victory
Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) is on the verge of an incredible, albeit extremely controversial, clean sweep in the West Bengal panchayat elections. The TMC is currently leading in all the Zila Parishads and Panchayat Samitis.
At 4:30 pm, in Zila Parishads TMC is winning in 259 seats, in Panchayat Samitis 134 seats and in the Gram Panchayats TMC has 1515 seats.
The counting of votes for West Bengal panchayat elections began on the morning of 17 May, a day after re-voting on the direction of State Election Commission (SEC) was held in 568 booths across 20 districts.
Polling was first conducted on Monday, 14 May, but violence ripped through the state, killing at least 13 people and injuring over 40.
