Some of the writing – how do we put this tenderly? – is at times bordering on corny. Still streets better than the infatuation of some tournament organisers/broadcasters to bill every contest a ‘war’. Two thumbs up, creators!

‘Mother Earth’ Madhuri Dixit entrances the Kalinga crowd with the ‘title’ performance of the evening – a spectacularly choreographed creation of Nupur Mahajan.

HWC 2018 is, of course, Odisha’s moment of reckoning. The stage where the Eastern Indian state announces itself to the world.

HWC 2018 Declared Open
The captains of the 16 teams are now being called up to the stage.
Argentina and three-time WC winners Australia are first up, in alphabetic order.
They are followed by Belgium, and then Canada.
China are followed on to the stage by 1986 runners-up England.
Up next come France, a team surely hoping to match the efforts of their footballers.
Germany probably don’t want to follow the trend set by their football team, they are followed by Ireland.
Malaysia – they who denied India a gold at the Asiad – receive a mild welcome, but Pakistan are greeted to a raucous cheer!
New Zealand, Netherlands, South Africa, Spain – they’re all up on stage now.
And finally – to the loudest cheer on the night so far – comes Manpreet Singh, captain of the Indian hockey team.
"Are You Happy?"
That’s Mr. Patnaik’s question to the capacity crowd at the Kalinga.
“All of us are looking forward to this 18-day hockey festival. I thank all of you for coming here,” he says.

High Spirits in Indian Camp
Playing a World Cup at home, with the pressure of a 1.3 billion strong population at close quarters – must be nervy, right?

30-Minute Delay at the Kalinga

The grand opening ceremony in Bhubaneswar has been pushed back by half an hour. No official reason yet, but the postponement has been confirmed by FIH themselves.

Who’s gracing the stage at the Kalinga Stadium tonight? Two of India’s biggest superstars from the film industry, plus the finest musician produced by the country.
We told you this is about star power!
To Bollywood fans, particularly from the ‘90s, Madhuri Dixit was not much short of a goddess. This evening in Bhubaneswar, she is portraying ‘Mother Earth’!
Confused? Don’t be.
The theme for the opening act, as per the official press release, is ‘Oneness of Humankind’. Yes.
The veteran actor will be joined by 1100 artists aiming to tell the story of a “united world”. We’re reaching Utopia 24 hours before the whistle blows on the turf!
The ‘King’ (or is he ‘Don’?), Shah Rukh Khan, will then reprise his love for hockey – you all remember Chak De! – by presenting the collected heart beats of India (we’re not making this up) to the 16 captains.
This isn’t some Sci-Fi sorcery to wow the world. King Khan’s presentation marks the culmination of the ‘HeartBeats For Hockey’ campaign, which was launched by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on 29 August (birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, for the hockey-uninitiated).
Then comes AR Rahman, who will bring to life his and legendary lyricist/composer Gulzar’s composition ‘Jai India’ – the official song and tune of the HWC 2018, before performing some of his most iconic songs.
At 90 minutes from start to finish, the ceremony will last a tad longer than the length of a hockey match. But hey, who’s complaining right?

It’s been seven years since India last hosted a global sporting event. But for the next 20 days, the gaze of the sporting fraternity is set to be fixed upon the Eastern Indian state of Odisha.

Starting Wednesday, the 16 finest nations in the game will train their guns on the biggest stage in the sport. The 14th edition of the World Cup, to many observers, is expected to its closest in recent times.
Lot’s to talk about from a sporting perspective, but while the attention will shift to what defines the World Cup – the players, and the game itself – from tomorrow, tonight is all about the glamour.
