Opener Mayank Agarwal scored his maiden double century for India in his first innings at home during the Test series opener against South Africa on Thursday, 3 October.

The 28-year-old batsman got to the 200-run mark off 358 balls, which included 22 boundaries and five sixes at Visakhapatnam, his fifth Test match.

Earlier in the day, Mayank had scored his maiden Test ton off 204 deliveries, which included 13 boundaries and two sixes at Visakhapatnam, his fifth Test match.

With Rohit Sharma scoring his fourth Test century in his first innings as opener in the format on the opening day of the Test, this marks the first time that two Indian openers have scored centuries in the same innings against South Africa.

Rohit eventually fell after scoring a brilliant 176, which brought an end to his 317-run opening stand with Mayank – the highest partnership for any wicket in Tests between India and South Africa, and also India’s third-highest opening stand.

Impressive performances in the domestic circuit had earned Mayank an India call-up. He made his debut against Australia at Melbourne in December last year, and recently played the two-Test series in West Indies. He scored his previous best 77 in the fourth Test against Australia at Sydney.
