The Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) sprang a surprise in this year’s Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections, bagging the posts of president and vice president. The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) managed to claim the posts of the secretary and joint secretary, as the much-awaited results were announced on Wednesday at a community centre in Kingsway camp, a day after polling.

The results were a disappointment for ABVP, which has been dominating the students’ union for the last few years. NSUI managed to bag the president’s post for the first time since 2012.

This follows a protracted period of campaigning in the University campus, where one could see banner-laden cars blocking the roads, increased police presence and umpteen number of pamphlets strewn all around the campus in North Delhi.

Through these photos taken over the last two days, we give you a glimpse into these elections, an annual affair at one of the country’s largest universities.

Supporters of ABVP were getting ready to celebrate their victory with dhols on 12 September.

Supporters of ABVP and NSUI, as well as journalists formed a fortification around the community centre in Kingsway camp, anxiously waiting for the declaration of results.

NSUI in the mood for celebration. Its contestants were greeted by chants of solidarity, firecrackers and the beats of the dhol as they exited the premises of the community centre.

Supporters of NSUI cleverly tinkered around with the poster of the film ‘Rocky Handsome’ - featuring actor John Abraham - to express support for their presidential candidate Rocky Tuseed.

The police personnel kept a tight vigil during the whole election process.

The DUSU elections saw a voter turnout of around 43 percent, an improvement from the 36.9 percent turnout last year.
