Fact-Check: Does This Selfie Show Rahul Gandhi With a Woman? No, It’s AI!

Several AI detection tools confirmed that the image of Rahul Gandhi with a woman is AI-generated.

An AI-generated image is being widely shared with the false claim that it shows a real photo of Rahul Gandhi with his rumoured girlfriend.

A photograph showing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with a woman wearing sunglasses is being shared on social media, where users are questioning the identity of the woman who Gandhi took a selfie with.

Some users have claimed that it shows the "daughter of a drug lord" Veronique Cartelli.

Is it true?: No, the claim is false as the image was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

How do we know?: Using Google Lens, we ran a reverse image search to look for more information about the photograph.

• However, we could not find any credible source sharing this image.

• We noticed that the background of the image, showing a city street, was unnaturally smooth and did not show any textures.

• Additionally, Gandhi's eyes and facial lines appear oddly shaped as well.

• These are two common signs of an image being an AI-generated one.

Is it AI?: We submitted this image to AI-generated content detectors SightEngine and WasitAI to verify whether the image was real.

• SightEngine showed a 96 percent probability of the image being an AI-generated one.

• It noted that the image may have been made using OpenAI's GPT-4o model.

It said the image was likely AI-generated.
