No, Muslims Didn’t Assault Minor Girl in UP Like Viral Post Claims
The video is authentic, but neither the accused nor the victim are Muslims.
CLAIM
A video showing a girl being brutally thrashed by a man has been doing the rounds on the internet, with users claiming that the man in the video is a Muslim. The text accompanying the video reads, “Atleast 2 Peacefuls Beating a Girl, they trying to torn her Cloth, and this might ended into Gang Rape. (sic)”
Through the claim doesn’t directly use the word ‘Muslim’ it says ‘Peacefuls’, a word used sarcastically for Muslims, referring to the oft-made statement that Islam is a ‘religion of peace’.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The video being circulated is authentic, however, the narrative is incorrect. Neither the accused nor the victim are Muslims as the viral post claims.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
While going through the comments, we discovered that Jaunpur police had responded to the tweet with the details of the incident.
While briefing the media, Jaunpur Superintendent of Police said that the incident was from Zafrabad police station and that the two accused, who had been identified as Chhattu and Kallu, had been arrested, and that they were all from the same community.
The police also added that the minor girl had gone to herd sheep in the area when the accused assaulted her.
Speaking to The Quint, PRO of Jaunpur police confirmed that the three were from the same community, and were not Muslims.
Media reports that had covered the incident made no mention of the accused or the victim being Muslim either.
