CLAIM

A video showing a girl being brutally beaten by a group of men is being circulated on social media with the claim that the victim is a Hindu woman being assaulted by Muslim men.

The Quint received queries on its WhatsApp helpline regarding the veracity of the communal claim with which the video is being shared.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The narrative with which the video is being shared is completely false. The incident took place in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar, where a 21-year-old tribal woman was assaulted by her family members for being allegedly involved with a Dalit man.

The incident was reported to the police, following which four of the seven accused were arrested.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

The Quint followed Twitter threads to arrive at the UP Police Fact Check account which hinted towards the fact that the video was not from their state but from Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar.

Speaking to The Quint, Dhar’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Aaditya Pratap Singh confirmed the incident and said that the girl in the video had fled with a Dalit man but after she returned home, her parents wanted her to get married to a man of their community. However when she disagreed, she was beaten up by her brothers and uncle.

He also added that while four people have been arrested, three others are on the run.
