A video showing an incident of police brutality in Uttar Pradesh is being falsely shared as a clip from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

A video showing two uniformed police officers and another man assaulting a man using a belt is being shared on social media, where the user sharing it has claimed that it shows an incident from Karnataka.

  • At the time of writing this report, the post had been shared around 3,200 times and was viewed more than four lakh times.

  • Some users have also shared this clip as one from Tamil Nadu.

Is it true?: The claim is misleading as the incident is not from Karnataka, but is from Uttar Pradesh's Mungra Badshahpur police station.

How do we know?: We carried out a reverse image search using Google Lens, which led us to an X post carrying the same video.

  • It carried text in Hindi which said that the video showed an incident of a police inspector beating a man inside the Mungra Badshahpur police station in Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

The post said that the video showed an incident from Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh.

  • A subsequent search with the keywords 'Mungra Badshahpur police video' led us to a report by news organisation UP Tak, published on 25 April.

  • It said that the video showed Mungra Badshahpur's station house officer (SHO) Vinod Kumar Mishra assaulting a man after he reportedly paid some money to get some work done, but asked for the money back when the work was not completed.

  • It also carried a statement by Jaunpur (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shailendra Singh, who said that a departmental inquiry had been initiated.

  • A report by Amar Ujala noted that the Superintendent's office took cognisance of the viral video and suspended SHO Vinod Kumar Mishra along with two constables, Vipin Yadav and Chandan Singh, who are the other two people seen in the video.

  • Taking cognizance of the viral video, the Superintendent of Police has suspended SHO Vinod Kumar Mishra and two constables Vipin Yadav and Chandan Singh who were assisting him, the report said.

Police clarification: We came across a video statement confirming that the police officers in the video had been suspended on Jaunpur Police's verified X page.

  • On the other hand, Tamil Nadu police's fact-checking account clarified that the video was from Jaunpur and not Tamil Nadu as some users had claimed.
