Old, Unrelated Video Viral To Falsely Claim New Nuclear Test in Bareilly

A video showing a blast in an empty plot, resembling an underground explosion, is circulating on social media.

The claim: Users sharing claim that it shows "A classified underground nuclear test conducted at Rithora, Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh, India."

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

• The video originates from the United States of America and has existed online since 2007.

• There are no credible reports verifying any nuclear test in Bareilly, UP.

What we found: We divided the video into multiple keyframes and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

• We came across an article on Wikimedia Commons, which featured a similar frame as the viral video.

• It was shared as "Subsidence crater in formation," from 2011.

• It also included the source of the clip, which was available on YouTube on a channel called 'Nuclear Vault'. The video dated back to 2010 and gave courtesy of the video to the US Department of Energy.

• We also found another video on YouTube by 'MyEarbot' dating back to 2007. It stated, "Historic underground nuclear test causes the surface to subside which forms a crater - seven such craters are used as disposal cells at the Area 3 Radioactive Waste Management Site. Provided by the US Department of Energy under Public Domain rules." (sic.)

• This established that the video was old and could be traced back to 2007, likely to be originating from the USA.

• We were unable to find any credible reports of a recent nuclear test that took place in UP, India.

• India has performed nuclear tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan, in 1974 (Smiling Buddha) and in 1998 (Pokhran-II).

Conclusion: The viral video is old and unrelated to India. We found no reports to verify a recent nuclear test in the country.
