(Archives of more posts sharing this claim can be seen here and here.)

But...?: The video has been edited to mislead viewers.

  • The clip, dating back to 2011, originally shows Putin stopping in his tracks as soon as Russia's national anthem starts playing.

How do we know?: A reverse image search using screenshots of this video on Google Images led us to a Facebook post from 2015, which carried different audio which did not feature the Indian national anthem.

  • Shared as a video of a "president who truly loves his country," its caption noted that it showed Putin reacting to the national anthem.

This post was shared in 2015.

  • Filtering our search results by time, we looked for instances of this video being shared before 2015.

  • This advanced search led us to a longer version of the video shared on YouTube on 1 February 2012.

  • At the 1:21-minute mark, we saw a banner with Russian text behind a stage.

  • On running a screenshot of this banner through Google Images to translate it, we found that it read, "Congress of the All-Russian Political Party "United Russia" - September 23-24 2011 in Moscow."

  • Using Russian keywords like "съезд единой россии путин государственный гимн" (Translation: United Russia Putin national anthem), we looked for the original report seen in the claim using Yandex.

  • This led us to 1TV's original report, published on 24 September 2011, which carried a full video of the United Russia party meet in Moscow.

  • We found the section of the video used in the viral claim in this report, titled "Speech by D. Medvedev and V. Putin on the second day of the United Russia party Congress (full version)."

This is a translated version of the original report.

  • We then looked for the Russian national anthem on YouTube, which led us to the Duke of Canada's verified channel.

  • About 14 seconds into the video, one can hear music similar to the audio heard in the original video of the political party meet, confirming that Putin stood still for the Russian anthem.

Conclusion: An altered video is being shared to falsely claim that Russian President Vladimir Putin stood still for the Indian national anthem.
