A video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi embracing Russian President Vladimir Putin is going viral with a claim that it shows recent visuals from the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China.

What does the viral post say?: An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the clip saying, "PM Modi to Russian President Vladimir Putin: If there is anything for me, please let me know. #PMModiInChina."

The post had more than six lakh views on the platform. More archives of similar claims can be viewed here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: The video dates back to July 2024, when PM Modi was a on two-day visit to Russia. This makes the viral claim false.

How did we find that out?: A simple Google Lens search on the keyframes of the viral video directed us to a similar visual published in a report published by Reuters.

  • The report was published on 9 July 2024.

  • The photo was captioned, "Russia's President Vladimir Putin bids farewell to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi following their meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia July 9, 2024."

  • The video was shared with a title that said, "Putin and Modi Embrace as Indian PM Ends Moscow Visit."

PM Modi's two-day visit to Russia: PM Modi had visited Russia in July 2024 to hold the 22nd India-Russia annual summit with President Putin.

  • On 9 July 2024, the Indian Prime Minister was officially conferred the 'Order of St Andrew the Apostle’ award by President Putin.

Conclusion: It is evident that the video is from Russia and not China as claimed by several users on the internet.
