A video, which shows police personnel beating a man after he along with another person were seen vandalising shops and threatening people on the streets, is going viral as a recent incident from Uttar Pradesh.

What did the viral post say?: The clip was shared with a caption in Kannada that loosely translated to, "There is lottery there is draw. Prize on the spot..This is the order of Yogiji!! There is nothing to wait and see."

An archive of the post can be found here.

This Facebook post had received over four thousand likes and nearly two thousand shares. You can view archives of similar posts here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: The viral clip could be traced back to at least December 2022 and was recorded in Maharashtra's Pune.

  • The incident took place near Sinhgad College, which reportedly saw members of 'Koyta gang' attacking shops and civilians.

What led us to the truth?: We conducted a simple Google Lens search on the viral clip and came across a news report by The Indian Express, which carried the same visuals.

  • It mentioned that two men allegedly from 'Koyta gang' were seen brandishing machetes and physically assaulting people near Sinhgad Law College in Pune, Maharashtra.

  • The report said that the accused vandalised roadside shops, which also led to people fleeing in terror.

  • As per the locals, the entire thing went on for around 20 minutes before police personnel from the Bharati Vidyapeeth Police Station reached the spot.

  • The police arrested two people, including a minor, in the incident.

The report was published on 30 December 2024.

Other sources: Media agency Asian News International (ANI), too, shared visuals from the incident on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

  • Its caption said, "#WATCH | Maharashtra: Some miscreants carrying machetes, who are allegedly from 'Koyata Gang' attempted to terrorise people in front of the Sinhgad Law College campus area under Bharti Vidhyapeeth Police Station jurisdiction, Pune."

Conclusion: It is clear that the viral video is old and is actually from Pune, Maharashtra, and not Uttar Pradesh as claimed.
