A video showing Member of Parliament (MP) Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sitting on a road is being circulated on the internet with users claiming that it shows her protesting against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

What have users said?: The clip's caption said, "Congress is giving belt treatment to BJP government on Waqf Bill. Jairam Ramesh has said that we will go to the Supreme Court against the Waqf Bill..."

The above post had gained over 1.9 lakh views on the platform at the time of writing this report.

You can view archives of similar such claims here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: The video actually dates back to August 2022, when Congress leaders including Vadra sat on a protest outside the party's headquarters against price rise and unemployment.

What led us to the truth?: Using the help of Google Lens, we conducted a reverse image search and came across the same visuals uploaded on an X handle named 'Manish Tiwari'.

  • The video was published on 5 August 2022 and its caption loosely translated to, "Outside the Congress office, Smt @priyankagandhi ji was sitting on the road, the dictatorial police stopped her from moving forward."

News reports: A Times of India report said that Vadra staged a sit-in protest outside the AICC headquarters to protest against price rise, unemployment and the GST hike on essential items.

  • The report said that Vadra, who was dressed in black, crossed police barricades and squatted on the road. The police personnel asked her to move from the area as section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) was in force in the entire area.

  • NDTV, too, shared visuals from the protest on its official YouTube channel.

  • It was posted on 5 August 2022 and its title said, "Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Sits On Road In Protest, Cops Surround Her."

Conclusion: It is evident that the video is old and is unrelated to the recent passing of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Parliament.
