Fact-Check: Were These Stacks of Cash Recovered From a BJP MP’s House? No!

The claim is false, as the photo shows cash recovered from Congress MLA KC Veerendra's premises.

A photo showing bundles of notes piled up on a table is being widely shared on social media, where a section of users have claimed that they money was recovered from the house of a Member of Parliament (MP) associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Is it true?: No, the claim is misleading.

  • The photograph shows money which the Enforcement Directorate (ED) recovered from Karnataka Congress' MLA from Chitradurga K C Veerendra 'Puppy' during search operations.

How do we know?: A simple reverse image search on the photo led us to a news report by The Times of India which carried the same photo.

  • It noted that Karnataka Congress' MLA KC Veerendra was arrested during search operations by the ED over his alleged involvement in illegal betting, both online and offline.

  • The ED conducted a raid of 30 properties associated with Veerendra, who is also called 'Puppy', which included five casinos in Goa and his brother's properties.

  • Bhaskar English reported that among the seized objects was ₹12 crore in cash, jewellery worth six crores, foreign currency worth one crore, and four luxury vehicles.

  • According to WION, the ED also recovered 10 kg of silver items, several property documents, while freezing 17 bank accounts and two bank lockers.

The ED also shared a post about this search operation on their official X account, where they said that the exercise was conducted on 22 and 23 August.

  • The agency carried out raids "at 31 locations across India including Gangtok, Chitradurga District, Bangalore City, Hubli, Jodhpur, Mumbai and Goa," they said, mentioning that Veerendra had been arrested from Gangtok, Sikkim.
