A photo showing a crashed fighter jet is going viral on social media to claim that it shows one of three fighter jets that crashed in the Himalayan region recently following Operation Sindoor.

What's the truth?: This photo shows a plane crash that happened in Jodhpur, Rajasthan in 2016.

How did we find out the truth?: We performed a reverse image search on the viral image using Google lens which led us to several old reports carrying this image.

  • Reports from 2016 shared by Hindustan Times, BBC, India Times and The Quint carried the same image and stated that it shows an Indian Air Force MiG-27 aircraft that crashed near Jodhpur, Rajasthan on 13 June 2016.

  • It also states that the two pilots escaped safely from the jet.

  • We also found the same image shared by Getty Images on 13 June 2016.

  • The description included similar details from the crash in Jodhpur.
