A video of tanks being transported on a train is going viral on social media platforms, with users claiming that it shows the Indian Army deploying tanks to the Bangladesh border on 7 December.

What does the post say?: Sharing the clip, a Facebook user captioned it in Bangla which loosely translated to, "India is going to the border of Bangladesh, army is ready to destroy the unreligion. Long live Indian army (sic)."

An archive of the post can be found here.

(You can view archives of similar claims here, here, and here.)

What is the truth?: The viral claim is misleading. The clip could be traced back to at least 20 November, and the visuals are from Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar.

How did we find that out?: A simple reverse image search on the keyframes of the video using Google Lens directed us to the same visuals uploaded on an unverified YouTube channel called 'Shamim Faruque'.

  • It was posted on 26 November.

  • We performed a second round of reverse images on the above video and found another older as well as longer version of the clip uploaded on an Instagram handle.

  • It was published on 20 November with a caption that said, "Hindustan Jindabad."

  • The location was identified as Muzaffarnagar.

The video was posted on 20 November.

  • Towards the end of the video, we found a big advertisement poster that carried text saying, "माँ का आशीर्वाद कलेक्शन".

Geolocating the place: Team WebQoof searched for the store's name combining it with Muzaffarnagar on Google Maps. We came across a store with the same name located in the city.

  • Using the help of 'street view' option, we looked for visuals near the railway tracks.

  • On comparing the visuals, one can conclude that the video was indeed recorded in Muzaffarnagar.

  • Swipe right to view all comparisons.

No news reports: Team WebQoof did not come across any news reports that talked about the Indian Army deploying tanks towards the Bangladesh border. In the absence of such reports, the viral claim could create unrest.

Conclusion: The video could be traced back to 20 November and was recorded in Uttar Pradesh.
