A video of huge waves moving towards what appears to be a residential area is going viral on the internet with users linking it to the recent earthquake that struck Bangkok, Thailand.

  • An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the video with a caption that loosely translated to, "Shocking videos of earthquake in Bangkok #earthquake".

What are the facts?: The video could be traced back to at least January of this year, which predates the recent earthquake in Bangkok.

  • Additionally, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) detection tool indicated the visuals are AI-generated and not real.

What led us to the truth?: On conducting a reverse image search on the keyframes of the viral clip, we came across the same visuals posted on an Instagram handle named '@stat.us.ai'.

  • The post was shared on 8 January with a caption that said, "Volcanic Eruption off the Coast of Italy #volcano #eruption #earthquake #italy."

  • This clearly indicated the visuals predate the recent earthquake that hit Bangkok.

The visuals were published on 8 January.

About the Instagram handle: The person running the account identified themselves as an "visual effects artist". We found that the handle regularly uploads such content. You can watch these clips here and here.

What did detection tools show?: Team WebQoof further verified the authenticity the video by using an AI detection tool named 'Hive Moderation', which showed over 99 percent of the visuals being generated using AI tools.
