Shortly after former Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli tendered his resignation amid violent anti-corruption protests in the country, social media users shared posts claiming that he was the "first and only" Nepali prime minister who never visited India while in office.

  • Among others, the claim was also shared by WION journalist Sidhant Sibal.

Is it true?: No, Oli had visited India twice officially in 2016 and 2018.

How did we find out the truth?: We looked for posts about the former Nepali prime minister on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's X account.

  • Here, we came across a post dated 20 February 2016, where PM Modi thanked him for visiting India with his wife.

A keyword search about this visit led us to a transcript of a press briefing on the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) website, which said that prime minister Oli and Modi had signed nine agreements and inaugurated one transmission line in Delhi's Hyderabad House.

The briefing was held on 20 February 2016.

PM Modi had shared another post about hosting former PM Oli on 7 April 2018, sharing a photo from Rashtrapati Bhavan.

We came across reports by The Kathmandu Post  and India Today, both from April 2018, about this "fruitful" visit from 6-8 April 2018.

The report was published on 8 April 2018.

According to reports by The Hindu and The Diplomat, Oli was scheduled for another visit to India in September 2025, which would have marked his third official visit as Prime Minister.

Oli was set to visit India this month.
