False Claim Viral That Rekha Gupta Bought a Car After Becoming Delhi CM

Previous CMs such as Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi have also used this car and is not a recent purchase by Rekha Gupta.

After the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Rekha Gupta assumed office as the chief minister of Delhi, a video is being shared that she purchased a high-end worth ₹50 lakh for herself.

The claim also noted that former CM Arvind Kejriwal's car was worth ₹20 lakh. It also mentioned that during the Delhi elections, the BJP criticised the amount spent on Kejriwal's car.

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

• The car in question (MG Gloster) has been used by previous CMs Kejriwal and Atishi and is not a recent purchase.

What we found: At first, we checked the registration details of the car on a website called RTO Vehicle Information.

• We found that the car was registered on 22 April 2022, which made it clear that it was not a recent purchase.

• We, then, noticed comments under the viral which refuted the claim. Comments alleged that the car belonged to the CM office and was previously used by Kejriwal and Atishi during their tenures.

• We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found an old video from September 2024 by the news agency ANI. Its caption read that Kejriwal was seen leaving Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Manish Sisodia's house.

• Similarly, new organisation Times Now also reported that Kejriwal owned this car in the viral video when he was CM.

• An ANI post on X from 9 February showed Atishi in the same car. The caption noted that she was going to resign as the CM as the BJP won against the AAP in the recent elections.

• We found a news report about the same vehicle broadcasted by NDTV Hindi on 20 February. It stated that the identical car, with the same registration plate, was earlier used by Atishi and Kejriwal.

• The report also mentioned that the Delhi government had bought such cars for a few ministers in 2022.

Conclusion: A false claim has gone viral that Gupta purchased an expensive car valued at ₹50 lakh after becoming CM.
