Amid the communal unrest in Bangladesh, a troubling video has emerged on social media, allegedly showing people being burned alive.

The caption claims that violence against Hindus in the country has increased to the point where they are being burned.

  • The post read, "The torture of Hindu brothers and sisters in Bangladesh has reached its peak..." (sic.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The video dates back to at least 2018 and shows mannequins being burnt at an amusement park in China.

What we found: We ran a Google reverse image search and found an image of a person standing next to a fire spit with what appears to be body being burnt on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform.

  • The post was shared in 2018 and mentioned "Chimelong Ocean Kingdom" as the location of the photo.

  • We searched for "Chimelong Ocean Kingdom" and found that it is an amusement park.

  • Its page on Instagram noted, "One of the most beautiful oceanariums in the world CHIMELONG OCEAN KINGDOM. (PRC)"

  • We scrolled through the page and found the viral video from 2018. The caption read, "Smoked little mans."

  • The video showed a man spinning the wheel, dressed in some sort of costume. Many comments on the post noted that it was a video from Halloween.

  • We ran a keyword search and came across a news report from 2020 from Sinchew which stated that the video was a part of the Halloween celebrations at the amusement park and did not show real people.

The Chinese website had fact-checked a false claim associated with the same visuals in 2020.

Conclusion: A false claim has gone viral that Hindus are being openly burnt in Bangladesh.
