A video of cricketer Mohammed Shami, wearing a skull cap and apologising, is being shared on social media platforms.
In the clip, the cricketer can be heard saying, "Yes, I broke my roza that day. Muslim brothers and sisters, please do not misunderstand me. I did not do it on purpose. I was forced to break the roza, otherwise, they would have destroyed my career. I apologise to my Muslim brothers and sisters again.”
This claim comes after a Muslim cleric commented on Shami that he committed a 'sin' by not fasting in the month of Ramazan after the cricketer was spotted having an energy drink at the match against Australia on 4 March as a part of the 2025 International Cricket Council (ICC) Mens Champions Trophy.
What we found: At first, we came across a video on Instagram by a user named, "shayarnoor" from 8 March.
The user claimed that the video was edited and not real as stated.
Moreover, the lip movement did not sync with what Shami was saying in the viral video.
We, then, went on a search to find the original video. We manually went through the cricketer's social media platforms and found the clip on his Instagram from 11 April 2024. It showed him wishing others for Eid which fell on the same date in 2024.
In the clip, Shami could be seen in the same outfit as the viral video.
Shami also uploaded some images of him in the same outfit with his family members on 11 April 2024.
Team WebQoof, then, ran the audio on Hiya Deepfake Voice Detector which noted that the audio was "likely deepfake."
Here are the results by Hiya.

Conclusion: The video falsely claims that Shami apologised for breaking his fast amid Ramzan during a match.
