Fact-check: An old video of a man shooting a cow in Manipur is going viral as one from Wayanad, Kerala.

A video showing a man shooting a cow is going viral on social media to claim that it shows Mohammed Mujahid Islam, the media head of the Kerala Congress, celebrating Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s victory in Wayanad, Kerala.

What's the truth?: According to the reports, this video is most likely from Manipur. The video dates back to May 2024.

  • It is unrelated to Gandhi's victory in Wayanad. 

How did we find out the truth?: We performed reverse image search on some of the keyframes of the viral video on Google and this led us to a Facebook post from 9 May 2024.

  • The post carried a screenshot from the viral video and the caption stated that this incident of a man shooting a cow twice is from Manipur.

  • We also came across a report shared by Free Press Journal on 7 May 2024.

  • The report stated that this incident is from Manipur and some users claimed that it showed a "Christian Kuki militant".

This video is from Manipur.

On 7 May, the Indian branch of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals responded to one such post and stated that PETA India’s team was working with Manipur Police’s cybercrimes cell to get an FIR registered and take necessary actions against the man in the video.

However, we haven't been able to independently verify the location of the video.

Conclusion: An old video of a man shooting a cow in Manipur is going viral as one from Wayanad, Kerala.
