A video showing police officers escorting two individuals, one of whom is asked about the large amount of ₹96 crore confiscated from his residence.
The claim: Those sharing have claimed that this video shows two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel suspected of espionage for Pakistan have been arrested. Users also noted that the two were caught in a train, carrying ₹96 lakhs in cash.
How we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search of some of them.
This led us to the same video, uploaded on a YouTube channel named Taak Jhank on 27 January 2018.
The description read: “Breaking News: ₹96.40 crore recovered from Anand Khatri, builder of Kanpur”, confirming that the video is old and not recent.
We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found several reports verifying that in January 2018, the Kanpur police confiscated ₹96 crore in old notes from a residence in Swaroop Nagar.
Reports by the Business Standard and ABP news noted Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhilesh Kumar Meena mentioned that the confiscated cash was connected to Khatri and others, who were charged under different sections.
This was allegedly the largest confiscation since the demonetisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 currency notes in 2016.
Sixteen individuals from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh were apprehended. Nonetheless, none of the reports referenced the connection to BSF personnel.
We did not find any recent reports which talked about a BSF personnel under the scanner for espionage against India and connected to Pakistan.
More context: On 26 May, Moti Ram Jat, a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was detained by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for purportedly providing sensitive national security data to Pakistani intelligence since 2023.
This comes amidst increased tensions between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist incident and India's Operation Sindoor, reported the Times of India.
Conclusion: An old and unrelated video has gone viral to falsely claim that it shows a BSF personnel detained spying on India for Pakistan.
