A video is going viral on social media which shows a man lifting up a schoolgirl's uniform, touching her and clicking pictures.

The claim with the video states that the accused has been arrested and identified as a Muslim man.

What's the truth?: The claim carries false communal angle. The accused was identified as Himan Gogoi by Meghalaya police.

  • The Meghalaya Police confirmed to us that the accused in this case is not a Muslim.

How did we find out the truth?: We performed a relevant keyword search on Google and came across reports about this incident.

  • The Times of India and India Today stated that accused was identified as Himan Gogoi, 24, and was arrested by the Meghalaya Police have in Assam’s Jorhat district for allegedly harassing schoolgirls in two separate incidents in Shillong.

  • It also states that the arrest followed the circulation of CCTV footage on 24 May which showed a masked man inappropriately touching a schoolgirl and lifting her uniform for taking photos.

  • FIR was registered at Lumdiengjri Police Station and the accused was booked under Sections 76 and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 11 and 12 of the POCSO Act.

  • According to East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, Gogoi is involved in a separate case under investigation in Assam.

Team WebQoof reached out to the SP (City) of East Khasi Hills Police, Herbert Pyniaid Kharkongor who dismissed the viral claim. He stated that the accused has been identified as Himan Gogoi from Assam and the accused does not belong from the Muslim community.
