Fact-Check: Does This Clip Show Asaduddin Owaisi Crying During Waqf Debate? No!

The video is an old one and does not show Asaduddin Owaisi crying in Parliament.

An old video of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi is being shared to falsely claim that he cried during or after the debate surrounding the Waqf (Amendment) Act.

A video showing All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi touching his face and rubbing his eyes in Parliament has gone viral on social media.

The claim: The video is being shared to claim that it shows Owaisi tearing up in Parliament during a debate of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on 2 April.

Is it true?: No, the claim is false.

• The video dates back to 7 August 2024 and does not show Owaisi crying.

How did we find out the truth?: We ran a reverse image search on the viral video, which led us to a post on AIMIM's official Facebook page.

• The party shared a clip on 7 August 2024 showing Owaisi in the same clothes as seen in the viral video.

• Taking a cue from this, we looked for the viral video on the Parliament's official YouTube channel, Sansad TV, using the date as a guide.

• This led us to a video titled, 'LS | Rajesh Ranjan Alias Pappu Yadav’s Remarks | The Finance (No.2) Bill, 2024 | 07 August, 2024', where Owaisi could be seen seated behind Congress MP Pappu Yadav.

• At the 04:32-minute mark in this video, Owaisi can be seen taking his glasses off and rubbing his eyes, showing the same visuals as seen in the viral clip.

The clip was also shared by Hindi news channel NDTV India’s verified YouTube channel.

Owaisi did not appear to be emotional or crying during Yadav's remarks.

Owaisi on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill: During the discussion surrounding the Bill, Owaisi called it "unconstitutional" and an "insult to Muslims" before tearing a copy of the Bill.

Conclusion: An old video of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi is being shared to claim that it shows him crying in Parliament amid the discussion surrounding the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2024.
