When the Moon is between the Sun and Earth, obscuring the Sun, and leaving a shadow on the Earth’s surface, it is called a solar eclipse whereas in the case of a Total Solar Eclipse, the Moon completely blocks the light of the Sun. There will a Total Solar Eclipse on 2 July 2019. It is likely to start around 11:54 pm Indian Standard Time (IST).

An eclipse is a natural phenomenon though Hindu Mythology has it’s own belief systems. According to which they often list out what people should and should not do do during an eclipse.

Here are some interesting facts about a solar eclipse or surya grahan-

• A Total Solar Eclipse is only noticeable after 90 percent of the Sun is covered by the Moon. When the Sun is 99 percent covered, daytime light resembles that of a local twilight.

• Three world class laboratories will be experiencing the Solar Eclipse on 2 July 2019 in it’s totality and for the astronomers, the eclipse of 2 July is the greatest ever.

• The longest duration of a total Solar Eclipse is for 7.5 minutes. The Eclipse on 2 July 2019 will be of 4 minutes and 33 seconds, the longest ever till the year 2027.

• The Eclipse’s shadow travels at the speed of 1,100 miles per hour at the equator and up to 5,000 miles per hour near the poles. The poles can observe only partial eclipses.

• Hybrid Eclipse: The Solar Eclipse that changes its appearance as the shadow of the Moon moves across Earth’s surface. It is a rare type of Solar Eclipse and is expected to occur on 20 April 2023.

• It is possible that the temperature may drop by 12 degree Celsius during a total Solar Eclipse. The Sun’s extended corona visible with the help of the longer eclipse duration.
