Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar returned to the campus after spending 14 days in Tihar central jail on Thursday, 3 March.
Kumar delivered a 50-minute speech and attacked the Narendra Modi government in every sentence possible.
First on his list was the only virtual response by the Prime Minister to the ongoing events, in the form of a tweet, that read “Satyamev Jayate” and attached to it was a YouTube link to the speech made by Smriti Irani on 24 February in the Rajya Sabha.
Addressing the allegations of insulting the Indian armed forces and their sacrifice, Kumar defended his stand by paying respect to the martyrs.
Referring to being branded as ‘anti-national’ for the “Azaadi” slogans, he said that JNU students demand freedom within the country and not from the country.
Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani, and BJP MLA Gyandev Ahuja’s remarks were also mentioned in his speech.
Kumar’s speech was heard and drew reactions from a number of people who flooded the social media with #KanhaiyaKumar, both for and against him.
