1. CM Devendra Fadnavis Says People Will Not Approve Of Shiv Sena's Dual Stand

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today said the Shiv Sena's "dual stand" will not go down well with the people, and its chief Uddhav Thackeray should decide if he wants to continue the alliance with the BJP. "They (the Sena) oppose all our decisions. They can give their suggestions, but cannot simultaneously play the roles of a ruling party and an opposition at the same time. People are watching everything and will not approve of this dual stand," Fadnavis said.

The chief minister was speaking at an event organised by the Aaj Tak television channel here. Sena, which is a partner in the BJP-led state government as well as the NDA government at the Centre, is seen taking swipes at the BJP nearly every day.

"As a party, Uddhav-ji has to decide. People do not like the picture they are portraying. Balasaheb (late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray) never saw every decision with negativity, neither does Uddhav-ji. But some of his leaders think they are bigger than the party chief and make (critical) statements," he said.

2. Exclusive | Police Caused Bandra Fire Due to Demolition: Survivors

After a level four fire ravaged a huge area of Behrampada slum in Bandra, Mumbai, on Thursday, 26 October, nearly 400 slums were razed to ashes, leaving thousands homeless. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, which, if you’ve ever been to Behrampada, is a rather curious fact.

Behrampada is Mumbai’s ‘no-go’ zone, in stark contrast to Bandra West, its rich cousin. Poor, mostly Muslim slum-dwellers, who work in home-based garment factories and tanneries, have made it their home. Hundreds of one-room accommodations are stacked together next to Bandra’s railway line.

How then, did the fire, which spread over a 20,000 square metre area and lasted three hours, leave only three injured, especially when the people were caught unawares?

Turns out, the story on the ground is completely different from that of the official version.

3. Brief Pause On Slum Demolition

The BMC on Friday temporarily stalled the demolition drive at Garib Nagar, the slums in Bandra East’s Behrampada outside the railway station, in the wake of Thursday’s fire in which as many as 300 shanties were gutted.

The drive is likely to resume from Monday.

However, the civic body on Friday issued demolition notices to around 500 shanties in the neighbouring Indira Nagar even as Garib Nagar residents, who had to spend the night on the streets after losing their houses in the blaze, complained that they were not given the mandatory 48 hours to shift elsewhere before the bulldozers rolled in.

4. Leander Paes Is Catholic, Rhea Pillai Is Hindu; Temple Wedding Was Not Possible, Say His Lawyers

Rhea Pillai and Leander Paes’ legal battle continues. (Photo: Yogen Shah)

In the ongoing domestic violence (DV) case lodged by former model Rhea Pillai against estranged partner and tennis champion Leander Paes, the defence lawyers told the court that in none of her petitions filed before the Magistrate court, High Court or Supreme Court had Pillai ever mentioned a marriage between her and Paes in 2008 after her divorce from actor Sanjay Dutt.

In their attempt to establish that there never was any such marriage, Paes' lawyers had earlier brought on record that Pillai has no pictures of the wedding. Pillai had stated that there were no witnesses, except for a friend who had seen the couple wearing garlands right after the ceremony.

On being questioned by Paes' lawyers, Aabad Ponda and Ishwar Nankani, Pillai admitted that her petitions did not mention the 2008 marriage, but they did mention a temple marriage that took place between her and Paes in 2005, when they had exchanged garlands.

Ponda brought on record: "There could never be a marriage by exchange of garlands - you being a Hindu and Paes a Catholic." To this, Pillai retorted: "By this observation, you are clearly calling Paes a liar. It is Paes who presented me as his wife in documents that were signed by him."

5. Neta’s Factory With Zero Net Worth Gets Rs 35-Cr Loan

A city bank has sanctioned a loan of Rs 35 crore to a sugar factory of which Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil, leader of the opposition in the state assembly, is a director. The Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank Ltd sanctioned the loan in its October 16 meeting.

Former Shiv Sena MLA Abhijeet Adsul, one of the bank board’s 21 directors, has opposed the loan and appealed to the bank’s customers to challenge this decision. Adsul claimed that three other directors have also raised objections to the loan sanctioned to the Vitthal Vikhe-Patil Cooperative Sugar factory because “it has zero net worth”, but Mirror could not confirm this with the three other directors as their phone numbers were unavailable.

Adsul claimed that according to Reserve Bank of India and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) rules, no loan can be sanctioned to a factory with zero net worth. Adsul also said that during the discussion of the meeting’s agenda, they were informed about the zero net balance of the co-operative sugar factory to which the loan was later sanctioned.

A 26-year-old man died after he was attacked with a shard of glass in a bar fight in Thane’s Mira Road. Although a murder case has been registered no arrests have been made so far.

Late Thursday night, Novesh Shetty, along with his friends Nikhil and Nilesh, was waiting for another friend to join them at a bar in Mira Road when he heard a ruckus outside. The three went to check and found their friend Kartik arguing with a group of three men.

According to police sources, the victim had returned to Mumbai three days ago from Bangalore where he worked in a hotel.

A resident of Anupam Building in Dahisar East, Shetty and friends made a plan to hang out at the Knight bar in Mira Road on the Western Express Highway. It was after 12 am and they were waiting for Kartik to join them when they heard loud noises from outside. When they went out they saw Kartik in a heated argument with the accused identified as Sujit Mishra, and two others. Shetty allegedly tried to intervene, but Sujit pushed him away which irked Nikhil, who slapped Sujit. The fight turned ugly when Sujit allegedly heckled Kartik who crashed into a window pane of an adjacent petrol pump.

Sujit then picked up a shard of the broken glass window and charged towards Nikhil who had slapped him. Shetty tried to stop him, and in the ruckus, his neck got slashed. A profusely bleeding Shetty died on the spot.
